KuCoin for Beginners (2026): Is It Safe, Fees, and How to Use
KuCoin is a long-running global crypto exchange (founded 2017), nicknamed the "People's Exchange" for its early altcoin listings and broad product range. Default spot fees are 0.10% / 0.10%, dropping to 0.08% / 0.08% if you hold KCS. KuCoin reopened to US users in late 2024 after a DOJ settlement.

Who KuCoin is for#
KuCoin is a fit if any of these apply:
- You want early access to altcoins that haven't listed on Binance, Coinbase, or Kraken yet.
- You like low minimum order sizes (~$1 on most pairs) for trying small experiments.
- You trade often enough that holding KCS for fee discounts pays back.
- You want competitive futures fees alongside spot in one account.
- You appreciate a deep product range (lending, copy trading, trading bots, launchpad, NFT marketplace).
It's not for you if:
- You want the safest possible regulatory posture โ Kraken or Coinbase are stronger.
- You're a US user uncomfortable with reduced features โ the US entity has fewer products than the global app.
- You only care about major coins (BTC, ETH, SOL) โ there's no real advantage over Binance/Coinbase for those.
How to open a KuCoin account#
The full sign-up takes about 10-15 minutes including identity verification.
- Go to kucoin.com โ verify the URL letter-for-letter; typosquats are a known scam vector (see common crypto scams).
- Click "Sign Up", enter email or phone + a strong password.
- Verify your email/phone with the 6-digit code.
- Enable 2FA immediately. Use Google Authenticator or a YubiKey โ not SMS.
- Save your 2FA backup codes offline.
- Complete KYC. Individual Verification (government ID + selfie) is required for fiat deposits and most full features. Advanced Verification lifts limits further.
- Set your trading password. KuCoin uses a separate trading password on top of your login password โ required for withdrawals.
- Fund your account via P2P (bank transfer, MoMo, ZaloPay, Pix, GoPay), card buy via Banxa or MoonPay, or on-chain deposit.
That's it. You're ready to trade.
Fees on KuCoin#
Spot trading#
- Default (Lv. 0): 0.100% maker / 0.100% taker.
- With KCS hold (20% discount): 0.080% / 0.080%.
- Pay fees in KCS toggle: an additional small discount on top.
- VIP 1+ tiers unlock at $50k+ monthly volume or $50k+ asset balance, dropping fees further.
Derivatives (USDT-M futures)#
- Default: 0.020% maker / 0.060% taker โ competitive but slightly higher taker than Bybit or Binance.
- Funding rate every 8 hours on perps.
Other costs#
- Card buys via Banxa, MoonPay, Mercuryo: ~2-3.5% on top.
- P2P: no platform fee โ seller's spread only.
- On-chain withdrawals: pass-through gas + small platform markup.
- KCS Bonus: a daily distribution of platform fees to KCS holders, paid in many different tokens. Often dismissed as small, but for active traders the math is meaningful.
Is KuCoin safe?#
KuCoin's security posture is more mixed than a Kraken or Coinbase, with real history to weigh:
- September 2020 hot-wallet hack: ~$280M taken. KuCoin recovered ~84% through on-chain tracing and partner cooperation, and covered the remainder from corporate reserves. No customer lost funds. The incident is the largest test of their solvency and reserve commitments to date.
- Monthly Proof-of-Reserves now published, including a Merkle-tree proof that you can verify your account against.
- Cold storage majority custody with multi-sig.
- US DOJ deferred prosecution agreement (settled March 2025): KuCoin paid ~$300M and committed to enhanced KYC/AML, re-enabling US access under stricter compliance.
- 2FA mandatory for trading, withdrawal, API key creation.
That said:
- KuCoin is custodial โ you don't hold the keys.
- The 2020 hack is the most serious historical event of any current top-10 exchange โ recovery doesn't erase that risk.
- US regulatory posture is now formalized but limited the available product set.
- Like any centralized exchange, KuCoin can freeze accounts at regulator request.
Rule of thumb: KuCoin is fine for active trading and amounts you'd accept losing. For multi-year holdings, move to a hardware wallet.
KuCoin vs Binance vs MEXC#
| KuCoin | Binance | MEXC | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Early altcoin access + product range | Most coins + lowest fees w/ BNB | Earliest altcoin listings + degens |
| Fees (spot) | 0.10% / 0.10% (0.08% w/ KCS) | 0.10% / 0.10% (0.075% w/ BNB) | 0% maker / 0.02% taker (promo) |
| Fees (derivatives) | 0.02% / 0.06% | 0.02% / 0.05% | 0.00% / 0.02% (promo) |
| US availability | Yes (since late 2024, limited features) | Limited (Binance.US only) | No |
| Coin selection | 800+ | 350+ | 2,000+ |
| KYC required | Yes for fiat & full | Yes | Optional below daily limits |
| Proof-of-reserves | Monthly Merkle | Quarterly Merkle | Monthly Merkle |
| Notable token | KCS (fee discount + daily bonus) | BNB (fee discount + chain) | MX (fee discount + airdrops) |
- Choose KuCoin for a balanced mix of altcoins, product range, and reasonable regulatory posture.
- Choose Binance for deepest liquidity on majors and best fee discount with BNB.
- Choose MEXC if you specifically want the earliest possible altcoin listings and lowest promotional fees, and accept higher risk.

KuCoin-specific features worth knowing#
- KuCoin Earn. Flexible savings, fixed-term staking, dual-asset products, and on-chain staking for ETH, SOL, ADA, DOT, ATOM, and others.
- Trading bots. Built-in spot grid, futures grid, DCA, smart rebalance, infinity grid โ useful for systematic strategies.
- KuCoin Lending. Lend your idle assets to margin traders for daily interest. Yields fluctuate with margin demand.
- Pre-market trading. Trade IOUs of upcoming token listings before they go live on the spot market. High risk, high opportunity.
- KCS bonus. Holding KCS gives you a small daily slice of platform trading fees, distributed in dozens of different tokens.
Common KuCoin mistakes to avoid#
- Wrong network on deposit. USDT on Tron vs ERC-20 vs BSC vs Solana are different chains. Match networks exactly or lose funds.
- Forgetting the trading password. Login password and trading password are separate. Reset takes 24-48 hours during which withdrawals are blocked.
- Listing-day buys on brand-new altcoins. KuCoin lists tokens early โ that's the appeal โ but early often means low liquidity, wild price swings, and 80%+ drawdowns within weeks. Position-size accordingly.
- Skipping the anti-phishing email tag. KuCoin lets you set a personal phrase that appears in every real email. Set it. Any "KuCoin" email without your phrase is phishing.
- Leaving long-term holdings on KuCoin. The 2020 hack memory is real. Active balance: fine. Multi-year HODL: move to self-custody.
Bottom line#
KuCoin is a solid second-exchange pick for users who want broad altcoin coverage, a deep product set, and a 20% fee discount via KCS. The 2020 hack is real history but the recovery and current proof-of-reserves practice are credible. For US users, the late-2024 reopening means it's an option again, though with a smaller product set than the global app. Sign up with 2FA, set the anti-phishing tag, save the trading password somewhere recoverable, and move long-term holdings off-platform once they cross what you'd be uncomfortable losing.
