What Phantom is, and why use it over MetaMask?#

1. Go to phantom.com directly. Click Download → pick your platform (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave, iOS, Android). Verify URL spelling — fake Phantom extensions have stolen funds.
2. Click "Create New Wallet." Set a strong local password (16+ chars). This protects the wallet from your device's other users — not your funds globally.
3. Phantom displays your 12-word seed phrase. Write it down on paper or a steel plate. Never screenshot, never store in cloud. This is the master key.
4. Confirm by selecting words in order. Phantom verifies you wrote it down correctly.

Phantom security — 4 must-have settings#

• Strong local password (16+ characters). Protects against device-access attacks.

Trade-offs: less mature for EVM DeFi than MetaMask. For Ethereum-primary users, MetaMask + dedicated SOL Phantom is still common. For multi-chain casual users, single-Phantom is fine.

Common Phantom mistakes#

• Installing from a Chrome Store ad without checking the URL. Fake Phantom extensions appear in Google Ads regularly.
• Storing the seed phrase digitally. Never. Paper or metal only.
• Approving Pump.fun signatures without reading. Many memecoin contracts have hidden drain logic — Phantom's preview helps but doesn't catch every variant.
• Skipping a hardware wallet. Anyone with more than ~$5k of SOL should use Ledger.
• Forgetting that unstaking takes 2–3 days. Don't stake SOL you might need to sell quickly.
